Eye exam refers more specifically to the collection of tests that are done by an optometrist, ophthalmologist or orthoptist in order to check the vision of a person, as well as his or her focus and recognition of objects. During this process, other tests and exams may be given. It is suggested by health care professionals that people have these exams done routinely as part of their health care routine, especially because many eye diseases are known for be asymptomatic.

Many different techniques and pieces of equipment are used in basic examinations, which are generally external. At a minimum, tests are done on pupil function, extraocular muscle motility and visual acuity. The process itself can help doctors detect treatable eye-blinding diseases, tumors or other problems in the brain, or ocular manifestations of disease. Many insurance companies cover routine exams. Prices for these tests, as well as contacts or glasses will vary.

Visual field tests are exams that are employed to identify any dysfunction present in central and peripheral vision. Usually these problems are the result of glaucoma, stroke, brain tumors or other serious medical conditions. The test itself is done clinically. Patients are asked to fix their gaze on a spot while objects are placed in different areas of their visual field.

Generally, simple equipment is employed during this process, for instance: Amsler grids, tangent screen tests. However, dedicated machinery may be used and if so, the process is then called perimeter. Other names for this kind of exam include Automated perimetry exam, Humphrey field exam, perimetry, Goldmann visual field exam and Tangent screen exam. A test of this sort may be administered by a technician, with aid from a machine or solely by an automated machine.

There are several other types of eye exams that are performed. In fact, these may be required in certain instances, for example: before receiving a driving license or being considered eligible for a particular job in which good vision is essential. There are many machines and doctors that serve as the vision tester for such screenings.

Every test will be different and produce its own results. Some are used specifically to check for color blindness, while others might be more concerned with assessing ability to see far away and up close. There are also tests done to check eye health, making sure all of the parts look normal and work properly. Consulting with a doctor is the best way to find out which tests to take, what the results mean and how the results can be treated, if necessary.

It is important to take care of the eyes because humans only have one set. In the event of eye or vision loss, not much can be done to restore that for individuals.
