The Benefits Of Using The CMS Pulse Oximeters

By Luisa Sharpe

Pulse oximeters are used in the hospitals you measure the amount of oxygen that is in the blood system and to monitor it make sure that it is in the acceptable levels. This is done by comparing it to normal levels which are 95 to 98 percent in normal people who are not suffering from any diseases of the pulmonary system. These CMS pulse oximeters is usually attached to the finger or any other narrow part of the body.

The oximeter is favored because it is a nonintrusive way of taking body parameters, as opposed to drawing blood and using it to test for levels of oxygen and hemoglobin. Taking blood samples will also not be convenient if the patient has to be monitored on an hourly basis or much more frequently as this will not help if they keep being asked for blood to do the testing.

The oximeter is usually linked to the multi-parameter patient observer. This has a large display and can be easily seen from distance. To check ones blood, one end of the oximeter is hooked to the patients finger and the other end will be the one to send readings to the huge screen where they will be clearly displayed.

Though an oximeter is able to measure the amount of oxygen in the human blood, it cannot be used to determine whether the patient is using up this oxygen. In order to to use this this device for this purpose, it has to be connected to other laboratory instrument to indicate this. Patients undergoing surgery are normally monitored using this kind of system as they have very unstable oxygen supply, and using this device will ensure that they are getting enough supply.

This medical equipment is the one that is used on the patients suffering from COPD and the sleep disorders such as hypopnea and apnea. This is will quickly easily detect any changes in the oxygen levels in case they begin to hyper or hypo ventilate and it becomes a critical condition. It can therefore be called an emergency medicine because it takes a few seconds to notice the danger that could have taken hours to notice.

The Pilots who fly at great heights that are above 10000 ft which needs them to have supplemental oxygen, will need these facility. It will help them check their oxygen levels. If they are not getting enough air, they will take other emergency measures. This will be a great way of saving their lives and that of their clients who are on the plane.

The instrument also accommodates the widest range of finger sizes from children to adults. It also has approval from the FDA and Health Canada for use in medical emergencies. The seven segment bar graph display is very crucial in the instrument. This gives good protection against ambient light as one will still clearly see the readings.

The CMS pulse oximeter has a small and lightweight digital led display that is not too tiring to the patient and it is also very economical on power consumption. It automatically indicates when it is on low power and so one will not need to worry about disconnecting it for a time.
